What’s the Difference?: Traditional Ranches vs. Raised Ranches vs. Split-Level Ranches

Ranch-style homes are typically defined by their single-story layouts, with low-pitched roofs and attached garages. Traditional ranches don’t have stairs connecting to primary levels, but two well-known variations of ranch homes are the raised and split-level ranch.

A raised ranch typically features a two-story layout with a raised entryway on the main level. You’ll find a small foyer in the main entryway with stairs leading up and down. The upper level typically includes the main living spaces, while the lower level includes additional living space and is partially below ground level.

A split-level ranch has three or more levels connected by short stairs. The entryway usually leads into a foyer that opens onto two levels. The bedrooms are typically located on the top level and may be separated from the living areas by a half-flight of stairs. All levels are partially above and below ground level in a split-level ranch.

• A single-story or raised story

• Low-pitched gable or hipped roofs
• An asymmetrical design that is usually L-shaped or U-shaped

• Attached garages, since these homes became popular at the same time as automobiles
• Living areas that are separate from bedroom spaces. usually divided by a long, private hallway
• Vaulted ceilings give the impression of larger living spaces
• Large windows allow sunlight with eaves to cast a shadow
• Other interior features can include a butler’s pantry, exercise rooms, or home office space
